Skull Amulet

East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
19th Century
Previous Collection : Old Museum #’s 13.73.627 on inside of skull.

This fascinating and early amulet is created from the cranium of a dog. The skull has been decorated with organic pigments and skillfully molded with Conus, Nassa and Cowry shells. There still remains some of the original teeth. Not only is this object aesthetically pleasing; but to the tribal member an important clan object; for the powers of the dog were transferred on to him when carried. In excellent overall condition for its age and fragility.

This fetish is 5 inches long.
