Dance Mask

Ramu, Lower Sepik River PNG
Early 20th Century
Previous Collection: Paul Harris, Anchorage Alaska
Published: " The Elegance of Menace " Aesthetics of New Guinea Art Michael Hamson 2005 Pg 90

Lower Sepik masks of this age are very difficult to find. Complete examples with their original fiber binding only increases this rarity. The face has a strong presence with its red eyes; diminutive pursed mouth and delineated cheekbones. The surface has acquired a deep encrusted patina from long periods of storage. The back of the mask is 'untouched' and is a perfect representation of how the back of a mask should appear. In excellent condition.

This mask stands 15" tall.
