Amulet Figure
Coastal Ramu River, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea
19th century

Providence: Private Dutch Collection, since the 1930's

This finely carved Amulet Figure was collected in the early 20th century. Finely carved with a beautiful aged patina, the Amulet still retains an original fiber attachment around its waist; a common feature on amulets from the Ramu River region. The face is classically carved and elongated with a hooked nose, giving the figure an imposing glare and highlighting the eyes. The top of the figure's head has been decorated with an asymmetrical design.
