Dance Mask

Madang Provence, Middle Ramu River PNG
19th Century
Previous Collection: Entwistle Gallery, London

This is a very rare stone carved example of a Madang Provence dance mask. Wonderfully conceived with a deeply cut section exposing its eyes, nose and diminutive mouth. The patina is exceptionally deep and encrusted from age. The mask is pierced around the rim. C.F New Guinea Art Master Pieces from the Jolika Collection (Marcia and John Friede) Fig 131 for a related example.

This mask stands 13 inches tall.
