Ancestors played a vital role in the daily life for the people of Nias. Heavily adorned with markers of nobility, this figure is depicted seated on a stool, hands resting on top of its knees and adorned with a necklace, ornate crown, and single earring. The inclusion of the figure’s genitals are a common feature in Nias ancestor figures. The broad shoulders and serious expression give off a sense of power and authority. This depiction is of a high ranking official and was once attached to a prominent altar, serving as a protector for the home.
