Handle to a Rice Cutter

Bahau, Dayak Borneo, Indonesia
19th Century
Previous Collection : J.J Porche, Paris

This is a tour-de-force of Bahau sculpture. This rare utilitarian object was carved by a masterhand; given care and attention as if it was an important large ancestor figure. The medium is deer antler inlaid with buffalo horn and the sculpture is fantastic. The classic Bahau face is tapered with a menacing grin and exposed teeth; in addition to an inclusion of delicately carved Aso's surrounding the sides of the body. The patina is soft to the touch from generations of handling and there are areas of encrustation. This is simply a rare gem. In excellent condition,
