Headrest
Ifugao, Philippines
19th Century

Headrests are an important and ubiquitous object in most tribal cultures. Some strictly utilitarian and simple; but others are elaborate and impressive works of art. This is an example of the latter. Surreal in conception with human heads as the legs of a zoomorphic animal. Decorated with a carved animal on the side; this is quite an ambitious work of art. The surface patina is incredible with the pillow region being deeply worn.

This headrest is 3" tall and 11" long
