Ancestor Pair
Dayak, Borneo, Nagju
19th Century

These two classically rendered Nagju figures are traditional representations of important ancestors. The seated figure with powerful shoulders rests in a meditating position crushing betel-nuts. The attention detail is exceptional; the hair is intricately done as is the design running down the figure’s back. The figure shown sitting in a chair is wonderfully rendered as well and is carrying a Mandau sword. The patina on both figures are deep from age and there are various chips that expose heavily oxidized wood.

The seated figure is 8.5 in tall.
The figure with chair is 11 in tall.
