Amulet Figure

Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private American Collection

This amulet’s unusual shape makes it a unique example from the Batak. The curvilinear horned shape is similar to Shaman’s containers from this region. However, this example is much smaller and would have been suspended from the pierced hole and worn or hung in a protective capacity. The amulet is superbly carved. The figure, depicted in a crouched position, rests its chin on its hands as it gazes out into the distance. The figure’s silhouette is carefully carved to delineate its distinctive features and expressive presence.
