Ornament for a Shaman's Bag

Batak, Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia
18th / 19th Century
Previous Collection: Old Belgium Collection

Shaman also known as datu-priests among the Batak carry bags that hold their ritual paraphernalia. These bags are adorned with brass ornaments such as this example. This excellent early casting is of a strongly stylized 'singa' with cascading waves and swirling motifs. There is an organic flow to this piece that exemplifies Batak sculpture. The high-points are soft to the touch from years of consistent handling. The patina exhibits a depth that is only seen in early metallic objects. In excellent condition.

This ornament is 4" tall.
