Earring

Naga, Hill Tribes of India
Early 20th Century

Headhunting was an integral part of the Naga people's lives. Naga artisans would mirror their beliefs in almost everything they create. This powerful warrior's earring is a perfect example of this. Conceived in Janus form with two superbly sculpted faces each possessing a raw tribal energy. They are both adorned with a dot pattern symbolizing tattooing; along with beaded eyes and a circular mouth that creates an archaic haunting appearance. The colorful rattan wrap and dyed animal hair contrast the starkness of these Janus heads. The patina suggests good age and handling. In excellent condition.
