Ifugao, Philippines
Late 19th/ Early 20th Century
Collected by Gladys Montgomery 1986-88 ( Co-author of the book People of the Philippine Cordillera, Photographs 1934-56 )

This rare figure in hunkered form is known as a Hapag would be placed in a shaman's box and used during important rituals. This example is beautifully conceptualized; the face is very expressive and the projection on the back of head represents a warriors hat. The body is well carved with thin limbs exposing vast negative space. Important to note is;attached to the figure is a warriors back pack; consisting of rattan and pig bristles. The surface is deep and encrusted from numerous ritual libations. In excellent condition.

The figure stands 5.5" in height.
