Ceremonial Rice Protector

Dayak, Borneo, Iban
19th Century
Previous Collection: Irwin Hersey, NYC

This is a classic example of early Iban sculpture. With an expressive face and elongated body which possesses a delicate curvature that projects subtle movement. Carved from Borneo ironwood with an old and slightly weathered patina from outdoor exposure; the ‘peg’ area of the object has a lighter patina from being inserted into the earth. Important to note is that the hands are carved in an interesting and unusual manner; the thumb and index finger are touching. In excellent condition.

This object stands 14 inches tall.
