Rice Stirrer
Kankanay, Philippines

PROVENANCE: Collected by Bill Siegmann, former curator for African Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

This Rice Stirrer from the Kankanay in the Philippines is a beautiful example of a well used utilitarian object. Made of wood, the handle has developed a deep shiny red patina from extensive handling, while the spatula has lightened and discolored from coming into contact with heat. The shape of the handle has been fashioned into the form of a simplistic human figure. While care has been taken to carefully delineate the facial features, the body has been created by three simple carved lines.
