Tuntun Pig Trap Amulet
Iban Dayak, Indonesia
Early 20th Century

PROVENANCE: Private collection, California.

Tuntun sticks are believed to have the power to attract animals to animal traps set by the Dayak. The stick is made of wood and would have been hammered into the ground. Measuring lines are still visible on this example. A figure sits atop the stick, and is smaller than usual for Tuntuns. This figure is highly stylized and seen in a squatting fetal-like pose. Its hands supports its chin, in an almost contemplative stance. Its facial features are expressive and beautifully defined.
