Bulul, Ancestor Figure

Ifugao, Philippines
19th Century

Previous Collection: Steve Alpert 1980's

Believed to enhance the production of rice; Bulul's are an extremely important part of the Ifugao culture. This example has a powerful body that supports an expressive face. The thick encrusted patina tells the story of countless libations during the seasons this figure was in use. There is a magic charge on the top of the head that was used to enhance the power of the Bulul. Carved from hardwood showing fine adze work throughout the sculpture. The original fabric is still wrapped around this figure; this is rare as most are lost.

Bulul stands 21.5 inches in height.
