Rice Protectors

Dayak, Borneo
19th Century

Reminiscent of German expressionism; these rice protectors have a stark and intriguing quality.  One figure has a wonderful heart shaped face with an elongated body; the other has a projecting head with a more tightly carved body.  Both have good use of negative space in their torsos and they each exhibit a patina from decades of out door use.  The peg extensions have been eroded away with time; but the ancestral images remain in great condition.

Both figures are approximately 6.5 inches tall.
