Royal Ancestor Figure

North Nias, Indonesia, 19th c.
Private European collection

Seated ancestor figures from Nias are reserved for only important chiefs; they are the rarest and most sought after style amongst collectors. Seated on a royal stool and holding a bowl in one hand, the figure is very finely carved and has a deep brown patina. Overall it is in excellent condition, except its sex was removed a long time ago, probably by missionaries.
