Coffin End

Bahau, Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th Century or earlier

You can almost feel the body contortion in this exceptional Dayak coffin end. The clawed hands and feet are features only found on the earliest Dayak carvings. While from every angle this object shines; its ¾ angle truly showcases the organic flowing quality that the carver brilliantly has created.. The deformed face exudes a sinister presence creating an eye-catching image. The surface is ancient still retaining some of its red and white pigments.
