Stone Ancestor Figure

Nepal, 19th Century or earlier
Previous collection: Irwin Hersey, NYC

These stone shrine figures found in the Jumai region of Nepal are mostly similar in posture either in seated praying position or in hunkered form; all have a varying degree of artistic merit. This particular example is charming with an expressive face and compact body with hands touching its chin. The stone has had numerous sacrifices made to it in the form of libations that create 'dripping' marks on the surface. The overall patina is deep and varied from years at the shrine. In excellent condition from a well known American collection.

This object stands 6.5 inches in height
