Handle from Ritual Ladle

Timor, Indonesia, 19th century

This handle is carved from a water buffalo's horn. At the tip of the handle a cup made from a gourd was originally attached. The cup is now long gone. The design depicts a large bird with smaller birds and lizards interconnecting within the space of its body. It has a very old crusty surface. There is a small, old break in the bottom right corner.

It stands 14 inches tall on custom base.
