Amulet Mask
Pende, Democratic Republic of Congo
Early 20th Century
Aluminum
Provenance: Oscar Agard, Newark, NJ.

The Pende replicate masks in miniature form. Made to be worn as decorative pendants, they can be made out of various materials. They function as protective and healing amulets. The Pende are also known for their beautiful renderings of the human face. This miniature mask is no exception. The almond shaped face, with diamond eyes, arched brow, subtle nose and mouth are molded perfectly. Facial scarring is visible on the cheekbones. The naturalistic appearance is striking for such a small object.

Height: 1.25 inches
