Eket, Head Crest Mask
Ibibio, Nigeria
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private American Collection

These elaborate headdresses are worn during funerals and association initiations that include both men and women. Attached to basketry caps and worn on top of the head, these portrait like masks exhibit a stylized naturalism. The heart shaped face, small nose, and pursed lips create a wonderful three dimensional appearance. The artist has included delicately painted eyelashes and facial scarring. Both heads share a joined coiffure, painted black and beginning low on both faces, the hairstyle extends upwards, coiling together on top of the headdress.

Height: 7 inches
