Small Mumuye Figure

Mumuye, Nigeria, early 20th C.
PROVENANCE: Drs. Jean and Noble Endicott, New York

This small figure from the Mumuye in Nigeria is very rare. Beautifully rendered, the long linear plane of the figure is highlighted by the finely carved face, rare in Mumuye Art. The faces on these figures are usually very elemental and flat. However, this figure's face is more detailed and the planes are well sculpted, especially around the mouth and nose. The series of diagonal lines neatly carved over the figure's face represent scarification marks. Facial scarring is an important practice in Nigeria and is believed to have healing powers and represents an important part of tribal identity.

Height: 11.75 in. high.
