Shrine
Object
Dogon, Mali
19th Century or earlier
Acquired from pre-eminent NYC dealer J.J Klejman in 1966
This ancient Dogon figural group was most likely used in a shrine context
due to its thick encrusted patina; evidence of numerous ritual applications.
By reducing the human form to simple tight angles; the brilliant carver
has created fantastic cubist imagery. Important to note about this example
is the fact that there are no restorations; many Dogon pieces have been
rebuilt due to losses from extreme age. There are some losses from erosion
but they are quite minimal.
This shrine object stands 9.5 inches in height.
