Prestige Pipe Bowl

Mbinji; Democratic Republic of the Congo
Early 20th Century

While many pipe bowls from this area seem derivative; this example stands out due to its thick construction and finely scarified head. Pipe bowls such as these were used only by individuals of high rank. The geometric motif on the hat show its close relationship and influence of the Kuba. The patina is varied; exhibiting encrustation in areas and deep wear on the high points of the bowl. There is an old break on the connecting portion of the bowl; in otherwise excellent condition.

The bowl is 3.5 inches in length.
