Head Crest

Ekoi, Cross River-Nigeria/ Cameroon Border
Early 20th Century
Ex: French Private Collection

This fine head crest is carved from wood, covered with skin and human hair. It also has a well executed base of woven basketry for attachment to the masquerader. The skin on these head crests are rubbed with palm oil and exposed to sunlight prior to being used; which produces a lustrous patina. The depth to the patina on this example suggests a lengthy period of use. The piercing eyes and open mouth expression on the face of this piece is very dramatic. There are some natural creases and folds in the skin, but in otherwise excellent condition.

This piece stands 10.5 inches tall.
