Pair of Fertility Dolls

Ewe, Ghana
Late 19th/Early 20th Century

These fine Ewe dolls show a great history of care and use. The female figure has a deep patina and wonderful ritual shavings from traditional practice; while the male example has an extremely worn surface with facial features that are almost totally obliterated from extreme handling. While there are missing limbs to these dolls; this is not ‘damage’ in the conventional sense. Some of the limbs have been purposefully removed. It is important to note that dolls with broken arms or legs were considered by the Ewe as more powerful.

Female stands 9 Inches tall and the Male stands 8.5 inches tall.
