Bronze Figure

Gan, Burkina Faso
19th Century
Previous Collection: Michael Oliver, NYC
Michel Huguenin, Paris 1989

Full human figures are very rare among the Gan; most Gan castings are of animals. This example is a superbly cast male figure with subtle movement in the body that gives the object a sense of animation. The figure is wearing a cache-sex, and its elongated neck that leads up to an emotive face slightly looking downward with classic Gan bulging eyes suggests, this casting was done by a master blacksmith. The patina is deep from age and the high points are soft from generations of handling.

This figure stands 4.8” Tall
