Teke Figure

Congo Republics or Gabon
Early 20th Century

PROVENANCE: Noble and Jean Endicott, New York. Acquired in early 1980's from Tom Alexander.

Fetish figures were carved by Teke artists. This figure exhibits an elaborate headdress, facial scarifications under the eyes, distinct forehead/nose/mouth, long neck, bent legs, and fetish bundle in an abdominal cavity, all of which are characteristic of Teke Fetish Figures. Although the Teke figures themselves were highly conventionalized, they served a variety of different purposes. Their magical qualities were delineated by the contents of the fetish bundle.
