Terra cotta pot

Bura, Nigeria
10th - 11th Century
Provenance: Private New York City Collection

Bura Terra cottas were first discovered in 1975 during archaeological excavations in the Niger region. The vast majority of objects are either vessels or human heads. Like this example, many of the vessels incorporated humanistic qualities. This Bura Pot exhibits an abstract face, with open mouth, elongated nose, and small eyes, characteristic of the Bura tradition.
