Diviner’s Prop

Burkina Faso
Early 20th Century
Previous Collection: Michael Oliver, NYC

This fascinating little door was of course not used as a traditional entrance or exit; but indeed a spiritual one from the real world to the spirit world.. It is a symbolic representation of larger doors in Burkina Faso used in a diviner’s ‘kit’ among many other objects. What makes this example special is its age, quality and fully working latch. The surface has sacrificial materials and the wood is oxidized from age. Examples of this quality, age and use are difficult to find on the market today.

This miniature door stands 4.5” in height and 2.5” in width.
