Twin Doll

Ibeji, Nigerian
20th Century

This Ibeji is an unusual distinctive example due to its stylized compressed face and overall hulking body. The ears are pierced for attachment and the many accoutrements are a nice touch to this example. This would make a nice addition to a more traditional Ibeji collection. While Ibeji are usually carved in workshops across the land; distinctive ateliers and carvers are identifiable; once in a while a relatively unknown ambitious carver breaks the mold and creates something avant-garde, as this piece proves to be.

This Ibeji stands 11.5 inches tall
