Standing Maternity Figure

Lobi, Burkina Faso
early 20th century

This figure from a shrine room is an exceptional representation of Lobi sculpture. Its textured, crusty surface bears traces of sacrifical blood and chicken feathers. The mother's face is finely detailed and displays striking expression. The baby appears in profile with a strongly stylized arm and leg and a subtle clutching of the mother is evident in the suggested movement of the piece. The extended right arm of the mother creates a visual balance to the placement of the baby cradled on the left side of her stomach. There is an old break where the right foot is missing.

The sculpture stands 15 1/4" tall.
