Passport Mask
Dan, Liberia
Early 20th century
Private UK collection

This small wooden "Ma Mask" is covered in leather; obscuring the facial features creating an enigmatic haunting appearance. The patina is such that the leather is worn deep into the wooden mask; yet in a subtle way the features peak through the leather which is quite impressive. This is an early example of a Ma Go (Small head) from Liberia.
