Slit Drum
Bamileke, Grasslands, Cameroon
Early 20th century
Provenance: Important American collection, acquired in the 1970’s, by descent to family member.

Small Slit Drums from Cameroon are quite rare. They were also used as reliquaries. In this instance, fetish material would have been packed within the vertical opening. The drum is surmounted by a figure with classic Bamileke facial features. It has protruding eyes, nose and mouth. Both its arms are bent, one going across its chest and the other raised beneath its chin. In excellent condition, it also exhibits a deep and dark patina from extensive handling.

Height: 7.25 inches / 18.4 cm
