Pagar Figure
Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia, 19th C.
Provenance: Emile Deletaille, Brussels

Pagar figures are protective agents and used by Shamans in a ritual capacity. They protect and ward off evil. This example from the Batak has a stern face and focused demeanor. The disproportionately large head in contrast to the rest of the body is common to most Pagar figures. It stands tall, contained, with legs closed together and hands placed in a diamond shape over the front of the body. This example is missing a stomach cavity, where magical substances would have been placed during divination.
