Heddle Pulley
Senufo, Ivory Coast
Early 20th C.
Provenance: Harold Rome collection, New York, inv. # 3114 painted in white on the back. Old New York collection, by descent to family member
Senufo pulleys often feature a stylized hornbill bird. The hornbill is one of the animals the Senufo associate with the creation of the world. This example is both beautifully carved and very well worn. Its patina is dark and rich from handling and oil libations. Its great age is clear from its archaic style and the extreme wear found on the piercing holes found on the bottom of the legs.
