Yam Mask
Wosera, Southern Abelam area, Papua New Guinea Early 20th century
Provenance: Private Chicago collection. Published: Art of the Abelam, fig. 91.
This is a classic Yam mask used during the Yam festival among the Abelam of PNG; but what makes this example special is the overall balance it possesses. The face has real character with its elongated nose; and attached ears, made from carved coconut shells. Its open raised mouth exudes power. The open-work coiffure is beautifully constructed with muted polychrome in shades of red and Reckitt’s blue. The weave is very tight and has an oxidized antique surface. In excellent condition for its age.
